The world is balancing between duality on the head of a crooked needle. Artistic expression is the thread that stitches these realities together in a journey of depicting the indescribable. In a magical blood-red sunset over the Pacific Ocean one may be so fortunate to catch the flash of green light just as the sun disappears. Do not blink or you will miss it. The grand artist has developed an infinite visual vocabulary that provides evidence of this equilibrium between worlds. We must only pull the blindfold from our eyes to see the artistic genius in front of all.

The mission of an artist is to search within their soul, and serve as a mirror to the viewer creating a reaction. This interaction brings into question where our feet are planted in the ground. Are we stuck? Can we not move from our fear or our insecurities? Do we not like this painting because it is easier to ignore the realities of this world then confront them? Does this painting speak to the soul where both night and day live hand in hand? A painting that creates no reaction of any kind is the only failure. Your shoes may carry heavy stones or feathers, make your choice because it is all within the illusions of our mind; you have the power to choose.

The shadow and the light, the negative and the positive space, fuse together as one in the creation of every moment. Do you wish to see only black and white or all the miracles this world has to offer of color? For one year, I painted with a palette of only light and shadow in order to heighten an understanding. The distinct nature of light revealed itself over many forgotten lands. Thereafter, an explosion of color spilled over my palette with each variation holding a distinct value. All of my senses have come alive while hitchhiking, painting murals, and working side by side with indigenous through half of our planet. The mind goes quiet, the brush moves, and I merely serve as the translator.

Through the remote villages of Russia I encountered those who carried a tear on their eyelash while a smile blessed their lips. It seemed the suffering that lives in their wrinkles taught them an appreciation for breath itself. My paintings represent the choices we all must make in our lives between being blindfolded within a box of fear or making the conscious decision to allow every moment, good and bad, to serve as stepping stones to our freedom. We are in a time where the boundaries of each medium are blurring in search of a unified voice. As we grow within, our surroundings evolve.

In my last solo art exhibition, Fusions of the Forgotten Moment, I brought a synthesis of multiple techniques and illusions. Paying homage to past masters, I pulled references from Van Gogh, Mondrian, Dali, Miro, Russian Iconography, and “Primitivism.” I juxtaposed them in a composition of timelessness. Through history we cannot deny the presence of suffering, but we have the power to choose the attitude we take into each day. I am compelled to share the impressions and images of my physical and spiritual journey through paint.
Humanity rarely changes until something breaks, unfortunately. In the earthquake of instability we either crumble or find our true strength and identity. Art has this potential of bringing the four directions of stability to the foundation we stand upon. While exploring nearly 40 countries, with endless experiences and stories to draw my inspiration from, art has literally and metaphorically saved my life. While homeless at an early age, artistic expression was the means of my survival. Survival is not only having a roof over your head and food on the table. Survival is also a state of mind.

Throughout multiple cultures and frontiers opportunities to practice art therapyhave arrived where I could tap into the true potential of troubled youth. As these children develop an artistic vocabulary the suffering slides off their shoulders piece by piece. When believed in, these children blossomed into brilliant painters. These experiences of sharing through the arts are the source of energy itself. Through working with the youth in Sarajevo, Bosnia, after the war, New Orleans, USA, after the hurricane Katrina, children from the inner-cities of California, programs in San Juan Del Rio, Mexico, San Agustin, Colombia and Cusco, Peru, it has become apparent that regardless of your background creativity offers us the opportunity to overcome even the darkest and coldest of nights.

These young people across the globe, these amazing souls, demonstrate the true power of hope through artistic expression. These experiences trigger images of myself during adolescence. When I was two years old, I would often open my eyes in the dead of night, crawl through the darkness to where my watercolors were waiting, and paint until the sun rose. I have walked down many paths over the past years, with one constant: the paintbrush. I live to be the best person that I can be. To be an artist is to choose not only an occupation, but also a way of life.

I saw strength in the eyes of children who survived the war in Sarajevo, Bosnia that told of their true understanding of freedom, while filming a documentary called Revival. I personally grew up among four siblings with a single mother. Both physical and psychological abuse passed through my childhood. I lived in the streets at different points in my life. By opening the pages of my own story with these children, a deep connection was formed allowing them the comfort to open up. The power of what was conveyed on camera sent this film to the International Independent Film Festival of Paris, among other film festivals across Europe. Revival was also aired on Bosnian Federal Television for the entire nation to see the strength of their youth. Through many lands, I have made an effort to listen to those in dire need of being heard. Now, as I paint, their stories echo through the movement of my every brushstroke.

Painting in the caves of Granada, Spain and living with Romanian, Bulgarian, and Spanish gypsies brought to light the riches of cultural diversity in the midst of poverty. While teaching art to the young Spanish generation, I simultaneously walked in the shoes of the impoverished. While standing side by side with the gypsies, awaiting the trashcans of food to come out of the markets, I noticed some resentment staring at me. However, when one is humble enough to get his hands dirty with the less fortunate, a friendship of sharing often results. This was in direct contrast with my experience in 2004 of playing professional soccer in Copenhagen, Denmark. I was in awe of those who were fighting with sweat and blood to survive, while my professional soccer teammates did not even know how to do their own laundry. I knew art was my calling, I packed up, and left for the road again.

I lived with the Garifuna people in Baranco, Belize, a tribe that was brought over on the Spanish slave ships. In them, I saw the power of nature’s art. These children ran barefoot down the dirt paths of the rainforest with the largest of smiles from ear to ear. With so few material possessions they transformed everything possible into a means of artistic expression and communication. I was accepted into the village like a brother. Cultures fused together. They gave me a Garifuna name and taught me ancient ways of their ancestors. Under the full moon, a six-year-old boy closed his eyes and began to play the drum. The power of expression shook within my soul.

Every one of us, every ethnicity, every social class, has some beautiful expression to share with the world. We all have genius within, but to express it we must first find the key that opens the eyes to our inner-strength. I will share this vision through the visual arts. My paintings reveal that amongst the war and starvation in this world there is always hope. Our bodies may be enslaved, but no one has the power to steal the freedom of our soul. Having art exhibitions in both Europe and North America, with mural paintings in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru, it is my directive to share this vision with as many as wish to listen.
